Through selected texts from Iqbāl’s Urdu and Persian poetry, and Reconstruction of Religious Thought in Islam, respected speaker will outline the spiritual thrust in Iqbāl’s philosophy. Iqbāl considers organized religion as the basis of a profound religious experience and it is this spiritual illumination that gives birth to Iqbāl’s self-conscious man.
Haniya Yameen is a Fulbright student at the Divinity School of University of Chicago. She is pursuing a Master’s degree in Religious Studies with an interest in the Abrahamic Religions. She completed her Bachelor’s degree from Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS) majoring in Social Sciences with a concentration in Philosophy.
Haniya grew up listening to Iqbāl’s poetry from an early age from her father who is an avid admirer of ‘Allāma Moḥammad Iqbāl. Her love for ‘Allāma turned into an academic interest as she pursued Bachelor’s program at LUMS where she took courses in Iqbāl’s poetry and philosophy. She has done a comparative research on Rumi’sMathnawī and Iqbāl’s Jawīd Nāma and traced the influence of Rūmī’s ideas on Iqbāl’s philosophy.
She has previously taught Philosophy at International Islamic University, Islamabad. She is also the recipient of the National Youth Award (2008) by the Government of Pakistan and has represented Pakistan on international forums including Peking University, China (2011), and University of Alabama in Huntsville, USA (2009). She is a passionate student of classical music and enjoys playing the Tabla and is recognized by PTV as the First Female Percussionist of Pakistan.
